BANGKOK, 22 March 2019 (NNT) - Chulalongkorn Hospital has held a seminar, on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, to create understanding and awareness of tuberculosis.

Director of Chulalongkorn Hospital Dr. Suthipong Wacharasin chaired the opening of the seminar which was attended by the Bureau of Tuberculosis and medical officials from both Chulalongkorn University and Chulalongkorn Hospital.

Dr. Kamol Kaewkittinarong, of the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, said families with tuberculosis must bring their children to hospitals for immunization as soon as possible to prevent severe infections in the lungs and brain. Each year, no fewer than 600,000 children die because of the disease.

Symptoms in adults include coughs lasting longer than 2 weeks, coughing up blood, fever, nighttime sweat and acute weight loss.

Tuberculosis is mostly found in the northeastern region but it is the north that has the highest death rate due to refusal to seek medical care. The disease is curable but requires a long term treatment lasting at least 6 months.
